Red foxes live in the wilderness, and also in cities around the world. They are curious, intelligent, and highly adaptable. While many people admire these remarkable creatures, others view them as a nuisance or potential threat.

If you're tempted to feed or interact with a wild fox, please consider the potential consequences. A fox that becomes comfortable approaching humans in one setting may put itself at risk elsewhere. In North America, feeding a fox often endangers the fox's well-being and safety.

learn more about foxes:
  • A group of foxes is called a skulk or a leash. Learn more at National Geographic Kids

  • Foxes in the U.K. are self-domesticating--acting more like dogs. The same thing is not happening in Canada. Learn more about this from Canadian Geographic.

  • Learn about famous foxes from literature and pop culture, from this Canadian Geographic article.

  • Did you know foxes - like dogs, have diochromatic (two-colour) vision? They are red-green colour blind. Scientists suspect that foxes see reds as a greeny-yellow colour. That means in the Fox and Fairies books, it's likely the dogs and Duluth can't see red or pink--I took a bit of artistic license for the sake of the story 😉 Mac Baldwin explains this well on his website.

My favourite book about foxes: The Hidden World of the Fox by Adele Brand
